OK, the title of the blog was a shameless hook to grab something very valuable: Your Attention. (Apparently, it worked!) I want to direct it to a fun article that cites clear research evidence that the human mind works best when it is focused upon one task at a time.
Multitasking Is Making You Stupid
Leaders are losing the capacity to focus, pay attention and think. It's a choice we make, and we can change.
Marshalling the attention of self and others is the currency of Leadership. One of my executive coaching colleagues, Blaine Bartlett, offered a masterful definition of leadership yesterday: "Organizing coordinated movement to create change." Doing so requires the focusing of attention - - first my own and then others - - in order to move forward.
